Prophetic flagging is worship with a flag in response to what Holy Spirit is saying or doing in the moment. A flagging minister listens first, then uses color and movement to declare God's Word into a situation or atmosphere.
It's rooted in two biblical patterns: banners lifted in the name of God, and worshippers who prophesied with instruments in their hands.
The flag becomes a visible word. Where a singer releases a declaration through sound, a flagging minister releases it through color and movement, and the whole room can see what God is saying.

What Is Prophetic Flagging?
Prophetic flagging joins two things Scripture already holds together: prophecy and embodied worship. Prophecy is speaking what God is saying. Flagging is worship with a flag in hand, honoring Him through movement and color. When the two meet, the flag becomes a tool for declaring His Word.
A few terms help define it clearly:
- Prophetic: responsive to what Holy Spirit is revealing in the moment, always in agreement with Scripture.
- Flagging minister: a worshipper who uses worship flags as a ministry, whether in personal worship, a church service or intercession.
- Declaration: a truth about God released through movement. Often it's a Scripture, one of His names, or a promise He has spoken.
- Situation or atmosphere: sometimes it's a specific circumstance, and sometimes it's the spiritual climate in a room.
Prophetic flagging is different from simply enjoying a flag during a favorite song. The flagging minister listens before moving. The movement follows what Holy Spirit is emphasizing rather than setting the direction.
The purpose of prophecy shapes the purpose of prophetic flagging. Paul writes that the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation (1 Corinthians 14:3). A prophetic flag in a worship service exists to strengthen, encourage and comfort the people of God.
Is Prophetic Flagging Biblical?
The modern phrase "prophetic flagging" isn't in Scripture, and the form has developed over time. Scripture supplies the pattern behind it. God's people lifted banners to declare who He is, and they worshipped Him with their whole bodies.
David's psalm ties banners directly to the name of God:
May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! ~Psalm 20:5
The banner goes up in His name. It declares trust in God before the victory is visible, and the heart of prophetic declaration is agreeing with what God has said before anyone can see it.
Scripture also shows worshippers prophesying with instruments in their hands. David set apart the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the service of worship:
who prophesied with lyres, with harps, and with cymbals. ~1 Chronicles 25:1
Their prophetic ministry joined music with thanksgiving and praise (1 Chronicles 25:1-3). A flagging minister stands in the same stream, with a flag in hand instead of a lyre.
Miriam is another picture. Scripture calls her a prophetess, and after the Red Sea crossing she took up a tambourine and led the women in a dance of praise (Exodus 15:20-21). Her prophetic worship was physical, visible and full of joy.

How Prophetic Flagging Relates to Prophetic Worship
Prophetic worship is the wider category. It's any worship that responds to what God is revealing, whether through song, instrument, dance, prayer or spontaneous praise. Prophetic flagging is one form within it.
What sets prophetic flagging apart is visibility. A spontaneous song is heard. A prophetic flag is seen... and sometimes a room understands what God is saying before a single word is spoken.
The two grow together. A worshipper who learns to hear God in song learns to hear Him with a flag in hand too. For the broader biblical foundation, read What Is Prophetic Worship in the Bible?
What Prophetic Flagging Looks Like in Worship
Prophetic flagging doesn't follow a script, but it does follow an order. Holy Spirit leads, the flagging minister responds, and the flag serves the response.
Listen first. Before the flag moves, the flagging minister pays attention. What is Holy Spirit emphasizing in the lyrics, the Scripture being read, or the prayer being prayed? What is happening among the people in the room?
Choose the flag that agrees. A flag of fire may declare revival. Gold may declare the glory of God, and white may declare purity and the righteousness of Christ. The choice follows what God is saying, not personal preference.
Release the declaration through movement. Sweeping, lifting and circling can each give visible form to a declaration. Sometimes the strongest movement is a flag raised high and held still.
Stay submitted. In a church service, the flagging minister serves alongside the worship leader and pastor. Prophetic flagging supports what God is doing in the gathering rather than competing with it. For practical steps, read How to Use Worship Flags in Church.
A declaration can be as simple as one line from Scripture or one truth about God. A flagging minister might declare:
- Jesus is Lord over this house.
- The Lord is our banner, and He fights for us.
- Let the fire of God fall on His people again.
- Your name is above every name.
In intercession, the same principle applies to a situation or atmosphere: a family in crisis, a city, a congregation facing discouragement. The flag joins the prayer with a visible act of faith. It says with the whole body what the heart is already praying.
Why Color and Layers Matter in Prophetic Flagging
Color is how a prophetic flag speaks. Scripture uses color with intention, from the blue, purple and scarlet of the tabernacle curtains to the rainbow around the throne (Exodus 26:1; Revelation 4:3).
At Catch the Fire Worship Flags, colors are treated like words, and a multi-layer flag is a complete prophetic sentence. Each named flag declares one unified message rather than a list of separate color meanings.
Fire Worship Flags bring red, orange and yellow together in one declaration drawn from Matthew 3:11: Jesus, baptize us with Holy Spirit and fire.
Fan Into Flame Worship Flags use the same colors to speak a different word from 2 Timothy 1:6-7... a call to stir up the gift of God and respond with boldness.
Both are part of the Triple Layer Worship Flags collection, where named designs express unified prophetic declarations. Three layers of fabric moving together give a declaration depth the eye can follow.
The maker matters too. God filled Bezalel with His Spirit before He gave him the tabernacle work (Exodus 31:1-5). Every Catch the Fire Worship Flags flag is designed in worship by Andrea York, an ordained prophet who prays over the fabric, prophesies while sewing, and prays over every order before it ships. The flags have an anointing on them because Andrea is an anointed flag maker.
Andrea also has synesthesia: she sees color in sound. She asks Holy Spirit what a word or sound looks like, and the answer becomes fabric. Read more in The Bezalel Principle.
Growing as a Prophetic Flagging Minister
Prophetic flagging grows the way every gift grows: through Scripture, practice, humility and time. A flagging minister who knows the Word has more to declare. Paul urged the whole church to pursue love and to earnestly desire to prophesy (1 Corinthians 14:1).
It starts in personal worship. The prayer closet is where discernment is trained, long before a flag is lifted on a platform. Ask Holy Spirit what He's saying, read the Scripture He highlights, and respond with the flag in hand.
A participant in a recent Worship Intensive shared that the teaching encouraged them to seek Holy Spirit's leading in worship rather than moving in their own strength. That's the posture prophetic flagging grows from.
For the decisions that happen mid-song, The Prophetic Flagging Minister's Field Guide covers which flag to choose, when to stay with a declaration, and when to transition.
The Prophetic Flagging Worship Intensive each August goes deeper still, with teaching and practice alongside other flagging ministers.
God is still speaking, and He still invites His people to set up their banners in His name. A flag in the hand of a listening worshipper becomes a declaration everyone in the room can see. To see what this looks like with the names of God, read How to Prophesy the Names of God With Worship Flags.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between prophetic flagging and worship flagging?
Worship flagging is any worship with a flag. Prophetic flagging responds to what Holy Spirit is revealing in the moment and declares it through color and movement. Every prophetic flagging minister is a worshipper first.
Do I need to be a prophet to do prophetic flagging?
No. Paul encouraged the whole church to desire to prophesy (1 Corinthians 14:1). Prophetic flagging grows from listening to Holy Spirit and agreeing with Scripture, and any surrendered worshipper can learn it.
Which worship flag is best for prophetic flagging?
The best flag is the one that agrees with what God is saying. Multi-layer flags express unified prophetic declarations. Three-layer designs like Fire and Fan Into Flame offer distinct messages rooted in Scripture. Having a few colors on hand gives room to respond as Holy Spirit leads.
How do I know what Holy Spirit wants to declare?
Start with Scripture. Pay attention to the lyrics, the Word being read, and the burden in prayer. Over time, personal worship trains a flagging minister to recognize His leading.
Can prophetic flagging be used in church?
Yes, with honor for leadership. A flagging minister serves alongside the worship leader and pastor, and prophetic flagging works best when it supports the direction of the service. Talking with leadership ahead of time creates trust for everyone involved.
