Today we answer the question: what are worship flags?
WHAT ARE WORSHIP FLAGS?
Great question! This is a common question from both Jesus followers who’ve been part of church culture for their whole life and people who’ve never stepped foot in the door of a church.
When I get that question, my short answer is: worship flags are like color guard, but for church. They’re dance flags. It gives you a mental picture to visualize but it doesn’t answer the spiritual significance of ‘what are worship flags?’
Spiritual Significance of Worship Flags
What is the spiritual significance of worship flags? God speaks in many ways, including through color & movement. In our physical world, flags help give directions, act as a beacon, stake territory, and provide a display of identity. Worship flags have similar function in the spiritual world.
Worship flags are more than a piece of fabric on a stick that you wave around. Worship flags are non-verbal communication that give direction, act as a beacon, stake territory and demonstrate identity.
Flags can be seen from a long way away, even before audible words are heard.
Speaking of audible words… even when you’re close enough to hear the message, if two groups of people speak different languages, the message isn’t received because the two groups of people can’t communicate. Color transcends language and can be understood independently of audible language.
Worship Flags Give Direction
Worship flags give direction. They communicate where to go, and who to go with.
Jeremiah 4:6, Raise the signal (flag) to go to Zion! Flee for safety without delay! For I am bringing disaster from the north, even terrible destruction.”
Worship Flags Are a Beacon
Worship flags act as a beacon. They point toward a place of refuge.
Have you ever seen a tour guide carrying a tall orange flag to let their group know where the leader is, so they don’t get lost or separated from the group? It’s the same in the spiritual realm.
Psalm 60:4, You have set up a banner (flag) for those who fear you, that they may flee to it from the bow.
Worship Flags Stake Territory
Worship flags stake territory. You’ve probably seen video coverage of when Americans astronauts landed on the moon. The first thing they did was put down an American flag to claim a territorial stake that they were there first.
Isaiah 62:10, Go through, go through the gates; prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway; clear it of stones; lift up a signal (flag) over the peoples.
Worship Flags Display Identity
Worship flags display identity. Americans are proud of their flag, and it’s not uncommon for households to display a national flag, which identifies them as American citizens.
Canadians love to use a little Canadian flag pin on a backpack when they are travelling in other countries because they want to let people know where they’re from.
Numbers 2:2, The people of Israel shall camp each by his own banner (flag), with the banners of their fathers’ houses. They shall camp facing the tent of meeting on every side.
