ARE WORSHIP FLAGS IN THE BIBLE?
It’s a great question. When I was first introduced to worship flags in 2010, I took this question very seriously in order to understand what worship flags are. Like you, I didn’t want to be doing something that the Lord wasn’t part of.
I was a Bible teacher. I was teaching Bible studies, and I was even writing Bible studies and I had never heard of worship flags in the Bible, so I was a more than a little skeptical.
Something was happening to my spirit when I used worship flags… it was like it had come alive but my head and my heart were not aligned.
Can you relate?
If so, you’re in the right spot.
The Bible is Not Written in English
The Bible’s original language was Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Bible translators may not have used the term ‘worship flag’ in their translation but there are other English terms, such as standard or banner.
There are multiple Hebrew words that are translated into standard or banner:
Nes = banner, distinguishing mark, sail, signal, standard, warning
One of the names of God, Jehovah Nissi - the Lord is My Banner, is a derivative of the word nes.
Degel/Dagal - banner, standard, standards
They are similar words with similar meanings.
Bible Verses That Mention Worship Flags
Here’s a short list of Bible verses that I found are especially meaningful:
Jeremiah 50:2, Lift up a Banner and declare to the nations…
The Lord instructs Jeremiah to make a declaration to the nation of Bablyon that their destruction is imminent.
It’s a marvellous revelation that flags make unspoken statements that declare truth.
Isaiah 31:9, at the sight of the battle standard, the enemy flee in terror
Isn’t that incredible?
Merely by seeing a flag, the enemy flees. The best battle is the one that you don’t even have to fight in order to get victory.
Song of Songs 2:4, His banner over me is love.
A sign of the Lord’s affection for you is by his waving a flag over you. If that’s something the Lord does, wouldn’t it be a good thing for you to wave a worship flag as well as a sign of affection toward Him?
Flags are also mentioned in Numbers, chapters 2 and 10.
The Israelites were instructed to set up their camp according to their standard (Numbers 2). It’s similar to the way we use national or state flags; a way to mark a geographical location.
In Numbers 10, the Israelites went out to battle according to their standard. Could it be the same battle standard that had the enemy fleeing in terror?

- Jeremiah
- Ezekiel
