Being childlike isn't about simple obedience. It’s about trusting that your Father knows and desires what is best for you.

A child knows her Father’s heart. She is secure and has faith that her Father will only do what’s best for her. That is what being childlike is all about. It’s confidently knowing that your Father’s heart is always good. But what does this look like practically, especially in worship?

Morning Devotions & Worship

Morning devotional setup with an open Bible, highlighted verses, a prayer journal, and a cozy mug of coffee symbolizing childlike faith and quiet time with God.

Today during my morning devotions, my mind began to wander. It’s not about my to-do list or future concerns. I’ve learned to keep a scratch pad beside me and write those things down because they don’t need my immediate attention.

Instead, I found myself exploring a thought sparked by my devotional.  Over the years, I've learned these mental journeys are not mere distractions. They are paths leading me straight into worship.

Worship is the place where I encounter Holy Spirit without distraction, and where the Father shares His heart with me. I gain wisdom when I worship… which just so happened to be the theme for the morning’s Bible devotional.

Placid Obedience or Passionate Exuberance?

A common image that often depicts childlikeness is one that pictures a child looking lovingly up at a parent, or peacefully following behind. However, my experience with my strong-willed son has been quite different.

When he was young if he didn’t want to eat it, wear it, or go there, he wouldn’t. Some might say he was stubborn, that’s what I was called a lot, too. But I love his fire.

Childlikeness is commendable in faith and it’s necessary to enter the Kingdom of God, so I’m not sure why a placid child is celebrated more than a fiery display of determination.

Isn't fiery passion also a powerful aspect of childlike faith? God, our Father, cherishes passionate worship and trust from His children.

Childlike Equals Trust

Real childlike faith is believing, without a doubt, that your parent will always come for you. No matter the trouble or missteps you take, you are never abandoned.

My own stubbornness frequently landed me in difficult situations, even from an early age. Yet I always knew my parents would be there. Their love was dependable, consistent, and secure; even when discipline was necessary.

If your childhood lacked this security - first, I'm sorry that your childhood experience didn't make you feel safe - but dear one, take heart...
